“Dawn aims to create works that are high-spirited and whimsical while retaining a certain degree of simplicity and humor. Most of her work is inspired by little, everyday moments and personal multicultural experiences.”

I first encountered Dawn Lo’s artwork in the windows of the Marpole Library. I didn’t know her name yet, but the displays enchanted me with the playful style. I enjoyed the seasonal scenes that quietly transformed with time. There was something tender and nostalgic about her work.

It wasn’t until years later, at the Vancouver Comic Arts Festival, that I met Dawn in person. I was immediately drawn to her table, charmed by the soft colors, curious creatures, and gentle humor in her zines and prints. I recognized her work as those from the library windows. I bought a pin and a zine that day, both of which I still treasure. Every year since, I make a point of stopping by her booth, adding earrings, cards, and more artwork to my growing Dawn Lo collection.

When you meet Dawn, you can feel that she’s someone special. Quiet and kind, with a steady, luminous presence. There’s that rare feeling when you meet someone and just know—you’ve met a good person.

To call Dawn’s work meaningful is an understatement. She pours her talent into projects that speak to her values and uplift her community. One such collaboration is with the Yarrow Intergenerational Society for Justice 世代同行會, which supports youth and low-income immigrant seniors in Chinatown and the Downtown Eastside. Her murals brighten public spaces from Chinatown to Richmond, and even wrap around city utility boxes. Small gifts of color tucked into everyday places.
There’s something quietly radical about that. When an artist’s work becomes a bridge to community awareness, art is not just decoration but restoration.
